Wandering folk bards who performed a large repertoire of epic-historical, religious, and folk songs while playing a kobza or bandura. Kobzars first emerged in Kyivan Rus’ around 13th century. Since their epic songs often raised the spirits of resistance soldiers, served national causes, and they smuggled political litterature, kobzars were supressed and prosecuted during both tsarist and Stalin regimes.
