Bulgaria: Mummers



Mummers ("kukeri" in Bulgarian), are men folk artists during festival, held at the end of the winter, before Lent. Costumes, covering most of the body, with decorated wooden masks of animals (somethimes double faced) and heavy metal bells attached to the belt. Dances performed in order to scare away evil spirits with costumes and sound of bell ringing, so that year would be rich and fruitful. Card shows Mummers costumes from different regions of Bulgaria.

The Devil's Bridge was built around 1500 by the Ottomans and it was part of an ancient road connecting the lowlands of Thrace with the North Aegean sea coast. There are many legends about name of the bridge- some say that you can see devil's footprint on the bridge, others- that you can see devil's face in the water below the bridge, or that the builders have had help from devil himself...
